Set Your Goals? Have You Really?

Our goals can only be reached through a vehicle of a plan, in which we must fervently believe, and upon which we must vigorously act. There is no other route to success.” — Pablo Picasso, renowned artist/painter
Do you feel that even though you are doing your best, yet your business or life is not getting anywhere? Are you wondering if you’re doing things right or what went wrong in your journey towards reaching your objectives or goals?

Let me ask you this…

When you were or are setting your goals or objectives, were you or are doing them the SMART way?

SMART goal setting ensures that your goals are clear and achievable. It sets  the direction of a specific goal through its specific milestones and time-based achievability. Hence, bringing you closer to making your goal a reality.

What  are SMART goals?

SMART goal setting is creating goals or objectives that fit the following criteria: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.

1.   Specific

Your goal should be clear and specific so you will be more focused and motivated to attain it. Instead of just saying “I want to grow my business”. You can change that and go “I want to earn X within Y months!

A specific goal should address these five “W” questions:

●     What exactly do I want to reach?
●     Why is this goal necessary?
●     Who else is involved in this goal?
●     Where is its location?
●     Which resources, limitations, or requirements are included?

2.   Measurable

How would you know that you’ve reached your goal? What metrics are you going to use?

For instance, if you’re setting your goal for a big project, then you can set some milestones with specific tasks to accomplish. Having measurable goals keeps you focused, lets you meet your deadlines, and keeps you motivated and excited in reaching your goal.

3.   Achievable

Is your goal achievable? It has to be realistic to ensure that you will be able to reach it.  You should make sure that you have the necessary tools and skills, and if you don’t have these, you would need to consider how to get the necessary tools and skills to meet your goal. You should also determine other factors as well, such as the effort that you need to put in or the costs involved.

4.   Relevant

Is your goal important? Think how your goal would impact other relevant goals. Your goal should be worthwhile, should be aligned with other relevant goals, or match the efforts or needs of other people involved — be it in your business or your life.

5.   Time-bound

Goals should have timelines. If you are setting goals for a big project, then you should consider breaking it down into smaller tasks and set deadlines for each task. Keep the deadlines realistic and achievable to ensure that they can be met. This will also ensure that you will be able to deal with any issue that may crop up in executing the goal, plan, or objective.

How to Balance Business and Life

You are so busy with your business. So much so that it seems you don’t have enough time for anything else. It seems you don’t even have enough time for your family, friends, or personal activities. To put it in a nutshell, it seems you don’t have a life outside of your business.

You strive to grow your business not just in pursuit of your passion, of doing something you love. It’s also so that you can bring in the big $$$ and live a financially-rewarding life.  A life where you can afford to send your kids to the best schools, vacation to places where you or your family want to go to, or enjoy finer things — it’s living the life of your dreams. Or are you?

When you are too busy that you don’t have enough time for anything or anyone else, how else can you enjoy the financial rewards of your business? You should learn how to take care of yourself, your family, and those people around you for your emotional and physical well-being.

Is business-life balance important?

Finding the right balance between your business and your life is essential for maintaining your health as well as your relationships.

In our technology-driven and social media-driven world, it’s getting easier to get access to business-related tasks or get connected with others from anywhere and at any time. It’s become the norm for you to check emails, take business calls during family meals, have a quick video chat with clients or colleagues, or finish your work in your home. While this may reduce your workload, this may put a damper on your family or personal life. It will become more difficult to put a dividing line between your business and your personal life.

Just like most entrepreneurs, keeping a balance between your business and life is your major struggle. It’s never easy to achieve business-life balance, that art of juggling business and other aspects of life — family, friends, and personal life.

Tips in juggling between your business and life

As country music legend Dolly Parton puts it, “Never get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life”.

Striking a business-life balance is never easy. So, here are some tips to achieve that right balance…

Set your priorities

Get your priorities straight. Make a list that reflects your priorities — from the most to the least important. From the list, you can then make some changes or trim your schedule. For instance, if you’re used to bringing unfinished work home, then you can change that. You can make sure that all your important business tasks for the day are done and you’ve scheduled your other tasks for the next day. This way, you can leave your office on time and you can spend quality time with those important people in your life or on your personal activities.

Set an e-free time

Technology has made life easier for everyone. It has made everything or anyone accessible — getting emails, getting business calls, to name a few — making your business work day seems endless.

It’s so easy to get caught with it all. Before you get so overworked and overstressed, make sure that you set some few hours, or even a day, for an electronics-free time. Turn off your mobile devices and spend some quality time with people or activities that matter to you. Or you can just take that day to recharge and destress yourself.

Set time for self-care

Exercise. Meditate. Go to a spa. Have a good massage.

Activities such as these are great stress reliever. These activities not only clear or de-stress your mind and body, but also help you stay mentally-focused and physically-ready to face the challenges ahead in your business and in your life.
