Set Your Goals? Have You Really? June 11, 2019June 11, 2019 KatieGodden “Our goals can only be reached through a vehicle of a plan, in which we must fervently believe, and upon which we must vigorously act. There is no other route to success.” — Pablo Picasso, renowned artist/painter Do you feel that even though you are doing your best, yet your business or life is not getting anywhere? Are you wondering if you’re doing things right or what went wrong in your journey towards reaching your objectives or goals? Let me ask you this… When you were or are setting your goals or objectives, were you or are doing them the SMART way? SMART goal setting ensures that your goals are clear and achievable. It sets the direction of a specific goal through its specific milestones and time-based achievability. Hence, bringing you closer to making your goal a reality. What are SMART goals? SMART goal setting is creating goals or objectives that fit the following criteria: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. 1. Specific Your goal should be clear and specific so you will be more focused and motivated to attain it. Instead of just saying “I want to grow my business”. You can change that and go “I want to earn X within Y months!” A specific goal should address these five “W” questions: ● What exactly do I want to reach? ● Why is this goal necessary? ● Who else is involved in this goal? ● Where is its location? ● Which resources, limitations, or requirements are included? 2. Measurable How would you know that you’ve reached your goal? What metrics are you going to use? For instance, if you’re setting your goal for a big project, then you can set some milestones with specific tasks to accomplish. Having measurable goals keeps you focused, lets you meet your deadlines, and keeps you motivated and excited in reaching your goal. 3. Achievable Is your goal achievable? It has to be realistic to ensure that you will be able to reach it. You should make sure that you have the necessary tools and skills, and if you don’t have these, you would need to consider how to get the necessary tools and skills to meet your goal. You should also determine other factors as well, such as the effort that you need to put in or the costs involved. 4. Relevant Is your goal important? Think how your goal would impact other relevant goals. Your goal should be worthwhile, should be aligned with other relevant goals, or match the efforts or needs of other people involved — be it in your business or your life. 5. Time-bound Goals should have timelines. If you are setting goals for a big project, then you should consider breaking it down into smaller tasks and set deadlines for each task. Keep the deadlines realistic and achievable to ensure that they can be met. This will also ensure that you will be able to deal with any issue that may crop up in executing the goal, plan, or objective.
